The SAFEST (Improving quality and patient SAFEty in surgical care through STandardisation and harmonisation of perioperative care in Europe), a Horizon Europe project in which ENSP NOVA is a partner, marked two significant milestones this week:
- The initiation of the Learning and Quality Improvement Collaborative, through a meeting attended by all consortium partners and collaborating hospitals, as well as Dr. Clifford Ko, a colorectal surgeon and specialist in patient quality and safety. During this meeting, some hospitals had the opportunity to share evidence-based best practices already implemented, which are aligned with the SAFEST standards prioritized within the project.
- The collection of data for the primary and secondary outcomes of the SAFEST project, led by the ENSP NOVA team involved in the project. This milestone is fundamental for evaluating the impact of the implementation strategy on hospital adherence to the SAFEST standards and its effect on clinical outcomes.
The SAFEST project aims to improve quality and safety in the perioperative context by increasing adherence to standardized and evidence-based practices, introduced and evaluated through a multicomponent intervention. To achieve this, the intervention, now commencing, will take place in 10 hospitals across five European countries. ENSP NOVA is part of the consortium responsible for developing this European project and is leading work package 6, dedicated to assessing and monitoring the effectiveness of the SAFEST strategy.
