NOVA NSPH presents priorities for Public Health

Publicado a 05/10/2024

The NOVA National School of Public Health of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa presented, together with more than 80 national and international organisations and experts, on July 9, the recommendations considered to be priorities for the future of Public Health and published as part of the White Paper Leading the Way to a Healthy Future.

The White Paper was created as part of the “Leading the Way to a Healthy Future” Platform. This pioneering cooperation platform was created by NOVA NSPH and brings together more than 80 partners from various sectors and areas of activity, whose priority is to promote a Public Health 5.0 model that responds to the main challenges facing health systems and society – such as health emergencies, climate change, human resources or an ageing population.

The experts’ recommendations highlight the importance of management and organisation in the transformation of health systems, as well as the need for greater citizen participation and integrated responses from the social and economic ecosystem to the challenges. The focus on mental health, planning and preparation for public health emergencies and environmental sustainability are other ideas advocated, also reinforcing the importance of knowledge translation, supported by technological transformation, and a new vision for human resources in health. “The White Paper took as its starting point four major challenges agreed upon by the experts: climate change, an ageing population, the resilience of health systems to public health threats and emergencies, and the context of slow economic growth and inflation. It was on these four challenges that we identified healthy policies and systems, healthy communities, a healthy workforce and sustainable health as the four major priority intervention areas for which we are making concrete recommendations and identifying facilitating measures and good practices that will make it possible to achieve our goals,” explains the director of NOVA NSPH, Sónia Dias.

The director of NOVA NSPH highlights that “this unprecedented collaborative work is an excellent example of how opening up academia to society makes it possible to find answers to the country’s and people’s concrete problems, and the White Paper is now available as a working tool for policy-makers and all sectors directly or indirectly involved in health”.

The platform wants to be an active partner in building a sustainable future, promoting agile, collaborative and technology-supported approaches that guarantee the well-being of populations. It also aims to create an environment conducive to innovation to transform health systems, with a social impact, but also in organisational management, participation, business models, technology, digital, artificial intelligence, data analysis and more.
