The Behavioral Science for Health and Sustainability at the NOVA National School of Public Health prepares professionals to understand, analyse and influence behaviours that impact population health and environmental sustainability.
In a global context marked by complex challenges – such as chronic diseases, population ageing and climate change – changes in individual and collective behaviours, as well as the adoption of healthy and sustainable lifestyles, play a central role in public health solutions. Behavioural science provides the models, methods and tools needed to understand these behaviours and to design effective interventions.
This Master’s offers advanced training in the application of behavioural science to the design, implementation and evaluation of interventions, programmes and policies in health and sustainability. Students develop the skills needed to translate scientific evidence into practical solutions that promote behavioural change with social impact.
The programme combines in-person and online learning, integrating a strong practical component and an applied project developed in collaboration with public, private or third-sector organisations.
This programme will feature a wide range of national and international lecturers.
The Master’s programme aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills required to apply behavioural science in the development of programmes, initiatives and services where behavioural change is a central element.
Specifically, it aims to:

Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or have an academic or professional background considered suitable by the School’s Scientific Council. A minimum of five years of professional experience and proficiency in English are also required.
Training in an emerging and strategic field
Behavioural science has increasingly established itself internationally as an essential tool to address complex public health and sustainability challenges, from promoting healthy lifestyles to encouraging environmentally responsible behaviours.
Applied and impact-oriented approach
The programme prioritises active methodologies and project-based learning, enabling students to develop solutions to real-world problems in collaboration with organisations and institutional partners.
Interdisciplinary approach
The programme integrates contributions from several fields (behavioural science, public health, public policy, sustainability and digital technologies), providing comprehensive training focused on contemporary challenges.
Applied project in a real-world context
In the second semester, students develop an applied behavioural science project with direct relevance to organisations or communities, consolidating practical and problem-solving skills. Partnerships have been established with public and private entities in the fields of health, sustainability and governance for the development of project work.
Flexible pedagogical model
The combination of in-person and online learning facilitates the participation of working professionals and promotes a flexible and collaborative learning experience.
Graduates of this master’s programme will be prepared to work in contexts where understanding and changing behaviours is crucial to improving outcomes in health and sustainability.
Possible areas of activity include:
Graduates may work in public organisations, health institutions, international organisations, companies, NGOs, research centres and specialised consulting firms.
