SAFEST – Improving quality and patient SAFEty in surgical care through STandardisation and harmonisation of perioperative care in Europe

The SAFEST project aims to improve perioperative patient safety across the European Union (EU) by increasing adherence to standardised, evidence-based perioperative practices by 15%, and reducing the rate of surgical complications by 8%.
To achieve this, SAFEST standardised practices are being implemented in 10 hospitals across five EU countries through a Perioperative Quality Improvement Learning Collaborative (PQILC). These include two Portuguese hospitals: São João Local Health Unit and São José Local Health Unit. Focusing on the entire perioperative journey, the project emphasises continuity of care and actively involves patients as partners in the co-development of the initiative.
At this stage, the SAFEST project invites interested hospitals to join the initiative and become part of an international perioperative patient safety network. Specifically, participating hospitals will have the opportunity to conduct a comprehensive self-assessment of their adherence to best practices in perioperative safety, identifying areas of excellence and opportunities for improvement, while contributing to the definition of new European benchmarks in patient safety. Join the initiative.
NOVA NSPH is part of the consortium responsible for the development of this European project, leading the work package focused on the evaluation and monitoring of the SAFEST strategy’s effectiveness and coordinating the project at national level. SAFEST is a competitive project funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Programme 2022.
