F. Leal da Costa

Health Policy and Systems Management Invited Associate Professor
Presentation

Fernando Leal da Costa is an Invited Associate Professor in the area of Management of Health Organizations and Services at NOVA NSPH. His areas of interest are health technology assessment and clinical governance, with particular emphasis on clinical safety.

He was the first National Coordinator for Oncology and represented Portugal on the Public Health Steering Committee of the Council of Europe. In addition to his academic role, he is a Senior Hematology Assistant at IPO Lisbon, where he is also responsible for the Myeloma Clinic. His professional activity has focused on the diagnosis and treatment of hematological and oncological diseases, with a special focus on myeloma, high-dose chemotherapy and hematopoietic cell transplantation.

He previously held the position of Director of the Hematology Service and the Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit (BMTU), and head of the Intensive Hematological Care Unit, which was later merged with the BMTU. He also served as Chairman of the IPO de Lisbon Research Council and Ethics Committee, and was a member of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. He is currently a member of INFARMED's Medicines Evaluation Commission.

He was Assistant Secretary of State to the Minister of Health from 2011 to 2015, the year in which he became Minister of Health in the 20th Constitutional Government.

 

Graduated in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon.
