Thematic Courses in Clinical Coding

    Thematic Courses in Clinical Coding

    Presentation

    Clinical coding is currently a key component of the healthcare system in Portugal. Since its introduction in the 1980s, its use has spread, being utilized across various contexts (public/private, central organizations/providers, hospitals/other levels of care) for characterizing hospital morbidity.

    The regular review of ICD-10-CM/PCS is a continuous knowledge update requirement. The program of Thematic Courses in Clinical Coding aims to address this need by offering short courses on specific topics.

    OBJECTIVES

    By the end of each Thematic Course, participants will have updated and deepened their knowledge in the relevant area by being able to:

    • Apply the correct coding of episodes and identify the most frequent coding errors;
    • Apply the most suitable coding rules and guidelines;
    • Correctly code controversial or complex cases;
    • Recognize, from the healthcare system perspective, the implications of clinical coding.

    The teaching model is participatory and aims to address practical issues that participants face in their daily work, recognizing their previous experience and promoting informed discussion about these issues.

    IDEAL STUDENT

    The Thematic Courses are aimed at clinical coders with training in ICD-10-CM/PCS and basic computer skills.
