Paulo Boto is an Assistant Professor in the NOVA NSPH. His research is mainly in the area of healthcare quality, including patient safety aspects, but also care pathways, risk adjustment and predictive modelling, case management, accreditation and variability in clinical practice. In the past, his work has focused on other subjects such as the management of chronic diseases, the cost-effectiveness of vaccines, the financing of primary healthcare and the restructuring of the hospital network and long-term care.

He worked with the Lisbon and Tagus Valley Regional Health Administration between 1998 and 2004. He was a consultant for the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) and a member of the National Council for Quality in Health between 2009 and 2015 and represented Portugal, on behalf of the DGS, in the OECD health quality indicators project between 2011 and 2015. He was Assistant Secretary of State to the Minister of Health from 2011 to 2015.

 

He has a PhD in Health Management and Policy from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, a Master’s in Health Services Management from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and a degree in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon. He has a specialisation course in Hospital Administration from the NOVA NSPH.
