A training program designed to equip participants with the skills to make informed and economically rational decisions in healthcare, applying economic evaluation tools that align efficiency with quality in healthcare services.
By the end of the training, participants will be able to enhance their skills in economically evaluating and comparing different healthcare technologies and strategies, supporting evidence-based and cost-benefit decisions. They will learn to integrate concepts and methods from clinical research, epidemiology, and decision analysis, broadening their critical and analytical perspective in economic evaluations.
Principles and methods of economic evaluation in healthcare (EEH);
Health technology assessment in Portugal. Economic evaluation and decision-making. Impact of economic evaluation on healthcare decisions and policy;
Identification and measurement of healthcare costs. Studies on the costs of disease. Budget impact. Cost valuation in Portugal and other countries. Hospital information systems;
Cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA). Models and sensitivity analysis;
Cost-utility analysis (CUA). Measuring quality of life related to health. Direct and indirect methods of utility measurement;
Cost-benefit analysis (CBA). Human capital and contingent valuation. Pharmacoeconomics and methodological guidelines;
Case studies: diabetes, multiple sclerosis, obesity, meningitis, psoriasis, HPV vaccine, coronary stents, breast cancer, venous thromboembolism, chronic kidney disease, HIV/AIDS, and others.
The awarding of 4 ECTS requires a positive result in the final assessment.
