    Alexandre Lourenço is an Invited Assistant Professor at NOVA NSPH. His main academic areas are Healthcare Management, Leadership, and Organizational Theory. He is responsible for the Strategy and Marketing, Hospital Management Practical Cases, and Health System Organization disciplines. He is also co-responsible for the Leadership discipline and collaborates in other curricular units, such as Health services management and Health financing. Currently, he is the Director of the World Health Organization Program “Capacity Development for the Management of Health Services in Romania,” which joins the NOVA NSPH, IESE Business School, University of Milan, European Health Management Association, and the European Association of Hospital Managers. His recent research is focused on the underlying factors of CEO appointments, their impact, and the resistance to change in healthcare.

    Alexandre Lourenço is a Hospital Administrator at Coimbra Hospital and University Center, having performed public functions in various institutions of the Portuguese Ministry of Health, including NHS Director Coordinator for Contracting and Funding and Board member/ Chief Health Services Officer. He is also a consultant at the World Health Organization (WHO) in financing, health systems strengthening and health services delivery, having worked with several governments worldwide. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he co-developed for WHO the Surge Planning Tool ADAPT that supported country efforts in planning hospital and community resources to face COVID-19. He is also the vice-chair of the WHO-Europe Tuberculosis Advisory Group (2017- ). He was the President of the Portuguese Association of Hospital Administrators (2016-2022), an executive committee (2016-2022), and a board member (2018-2022) of the European Association of Hospital Managers. He was a member of the EIT Health Advisory Board on High-Value Health (2020-2022). Since 2019, he has been the Treasurer of the European Health Management Association. He is also a member of the Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical Advisory Council. Currently, he also co-chairs the World Hospital Congress Steering Committee and he is a member of the EIT Health pan-European initiative focusing on the European Health Data Space (EHDS).

     

    Alexandre Lourenço holds a Ph.D. in Management from Nova School of Business & Economics, Lisbon. He is a Specialist in Hospital Administration, a postgraduate in Primary Health Care Management, a Master’s in Health Management (MSc) from the NOVA NSPH, and a B.Sc. in Biology from the University of Coimbra.
