Fernando Leal da Costa is an Invited Associate Professor in the area of Management of Health Organisations and Services at ENSP NOVA. His areas of interest are health technology assessment and clinical governance, with particular emphasis on clinical safety.
Dr Fernando Leal da Costa was the first National Coordinator for Oncology and represented Portugal on the Public Health Steering Committee of the Council of Europe. In addition to his academic role, he is a Senior Haematology Assistant at IPO Lisbon, where he is also responsible for the Myeloma Clinic. His professional activity has centred on the diagnosis and treatment of haematological and oncological diseases, with a special focus on myeloma, high-dose chemotherapy and haematopoietic cell transplantation.
He previously held the position of Director of the Haematology Department and the Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit (BMTU), and head of the Haematological Intensive Care Unit, which was later merged with the BMTU. He also served as Chairman of the IPO Lisbon Research Council and Ethics Committee, and was a member of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. He is currently a member of INFARMED’s Medicines Evaluation Commission.
He was Assistant Secretary of State to the Minister of Health from 2011 to 2015, when he took over as Minister of Health in the 20th Constitutional Government.
He graduated in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon.
