James McDonald Buchan is Senior Fellow at the Health Foundation, UK, where he works on health workforce policy analysis. He is also Adjunct Professor at the WHO Collaborating Centre, University of Technology, Sydney, Australia. He has specialized in healthcare workforce policy throughout his career, which includes periods working at a senior level in government in Scotland and in Australia as well as for WHO. He specialises in policy analysis, engagement and advice at national level and internationally on the health workforce implications of health sector reorganisation and healthcare reform; pay, incentives and reward strategy; workforce planning; employment relations; regulation; performance management, labour market analysis; and skill mix/ advanced practice/extended roles.

James Buchan is Editor Emeritus of Human Resources for Health, the peer reviewed journal affiliated with WHO.

 

Buchan received his Master’s from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, and his PhD from the Business School, Robert Gordon University, Scotland.
