    João Valente Cordeiro is an Assistant Professor of Health Law and Ethics at the National School of Public Health, NOVA University Lisbon (ENSP-UNL). He has a particular interest in the ethical, legal, and social implications of science and technology, and for several years he has focused on the interface between Health, Science, Technology, Law, and Ethics. At NOVA University, he teaches and conducts research on Health Law, Ethics in Science and Technology, Bioethics, Digital Health, and Precision Medicine. He also coordinates the Research Ethics Course of NOVA Doctoral School.

    Dr. Cordeiro has conducted scientific research at several prestigious institutions, including the Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology in Porto, the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam, Cancer Research UK, and Instituto de Medicina Molecular in Lisbon. Throughout his career, he has worked in five multidisciplinary research labs across three European countries, where he used animal systems and human cells to study bacteria and virus models. His work has been published in high-impact scientific journals, and he currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Portuguese Journal of Public Health.

    As a member of various ethics committees, including NOVA NSPH, NOVASBE, and the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Lisbon, João Cordeiro has been involved in evaluating research involving human subjects. He is also a practicing health lawyer and a member of the Portuguese Bar Association.

    He has a PhD in Biochemistry and Virology from University College London and a degree in Biochemistry from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto and in Law from the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon.
