Paulo Sousa is an Associate Professor and coordinator of the Department of Health Strategies at the NOVA National School of Public Health. He is also Deputy Coordinator of the Specialization Course in Public Health, Coordinator of the International Course in Health Quality and Patient Safety (a partnership between NOVA NSPH and Sérgio Arouca – Fiocruz, Rio de Janeiro).
His areas of academic and research interest are Health Policies and Systems, Strategic Planning and Decentralisation in Health; Implementation and Evaluation of Quality Improvement and Patient Safety initiatives, Evaluation of Risk-Adjusted Health Outcomes (outcomes research) and Cardiovascular Diseases.
Paulo Sousa is Head of the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Education, Research and Evaluation of Safety and Quality in Healthcare. He is also Chairman of the Strategic Board of the Centro Académico Clínico das Beiras, a member of the Executive Committee of Stop Infeção 2.0, Vice-Chairman of the Portuguese Association for the Promotion of Public Health, a WHO expert on Quality and Patient Safety issues and a member of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement in a health quality improvement project. He also sits on the editorial board of the following publications: International Journal for Quality in Health Care; Revista Portuguesa de Cardiologia and the Portuguese Journal of Public Health.
He has a PhD in Public Health, specializing in Health Policy, Management and Administration and an Aggregate Degree in the same area (National School of Public Health – NOVA).
