The European Public Health Conference has come to an end after an intense and rewarding week, with over 3,000 people gathering in Lisbon to discuss the future of Public Health and share best practices and projects. The event, under the theme “Sailing the Waves of European Public Health: Exploring a Sea of Innovation”, featured Sónia Dias, Director of NOVA NSPH, as the Scientific Chair, and Ricardo Mexia from INSA as the Chair.
One of the key outcomes of the conference was the Lisbon 2024 Statement on Public Health Innovation, which has already been signed by several national and international organisations, including NOVA NSPH. This document reinforces our commitment to accessible and sustainable innovations that reduce inequalities, improve health outcomes, and address the social, environmental, and commercial determinants of health.
The document sets out several commitments, namely:
- Promoting Responsible and Equitable Innovation for Sustainable Public Health;
- Strengthening Policies and Advocacy;
- Empowering People and Enhancing the European Health Data Space.
The statement also includes a call to action for the promotion of innovation, the development of sustainable practices, fostering greater collaboration, advocating for evidence-based policies, engaging and empowering citizens, and supporting the European Health Data Space.

The key moments of the conference, which included space for fado and other cultural exchanges related to Portuguese heritage, as well as plenary sessions, can be revisited here.
It is worth noting that this year, at the 17th European Public Health Conference, we received a record-breaking 3,364 abstracts, including oral presentations, pitches, and posters. This diversity provided an inclusive platform for both experienced researchers and emerging professionals.
With prestigious partners such as the European Commission and the WHO Regional Office for Europe, we have strengthened our capacity to tackle complex health challenges through intersectoral partnerships. Together, we are building a bridge between science and policy to ensure that our innovations reach those who need them most.
