Conference on the WHO Pandemic Treaty

The NOVA National School of Public Health (NOVA NSPH) is organising, in collaboration with Erasmus University Rotterdam, the conference “The Pandemic Treaty. A New Global Public Health Instrument”. The event will take place on 9 May 2025 in the auditorium of NOVA NSPH and can also be attended remotely.

The pandemic exposed significant weaknesses in the international community’s ability to respond to a global health crisis, from inequalities in the distribution of vaccines and tests to shortcomings in international communication. Member States of the World Health Organization (WHO) agreed to draft and negotiate a new convention, also referred to as an “agreement,” under the organisation’s constitution, with the aim of strengthening prevention, preparedness, and response to future pandemics on a global scale. However, a consensus has yet to be reached.

These issues will be at the forefront of the conference, which aims to explore the Pandemic Treaty from various perspectives, including public health, ethics, law, economics, and other sciences.

The event will feature Mark Eccleston-Turner, a Global Health Law expert from King’s College London, as the keynote speaker. It will provide a valuable opportunity to discuss key topics such as pandemic governance, technology transfer, funding, and human rights within the context of the treaty.

The call for abstracts closes on 1 March.
