NOVA NSPH joins forces to prevent breast cancer

Published: 22.10.2024

The NOVA National School of Public Health (NOVA NSPH) joined in this ‘Pink October’ with the awareness actions coordinated by the Portuguese League Against Cancer, whose campaign seeks to raise awareness of the importance of prevention and early detection of breast cancer, as well as encouraging participation in screening and supporting research in this area.

In a symbolic moment, a group of NOVA NSPH professors, researchers and employees dressed in pink and took a group photo, as a way of raising awareness of this oncological pathology and demonstrating the importance we can all have in a healthier path, with the Academy playing an especially important role in producing evidence to support decision-making.

The movement known as ‘Pink October’ was born in the USA in the 1990s with the aim of inspiring change and mobilising society in the fight against breast cancer. Since then, all over the world, the colour pink has been used to honour people with breast cancer, raise awareness of prevention and early diagnosis and support research in this area.

It is estimated that around 9,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed every year in Portugal, with a further 2,000 deaths. Early diagnosis is very important for successful treatment, with a cure rate of over 90 per cent.
