The National School of Public Health of NOVA University Lisbon (NOVA NSPH) has joined ExpoHealthNet, a European collaborative research cluster funded by the Horizon Europe programme.
ExpoHealthNet brings together seven research projects exploring the impact of air pollution, ultrafine particles, waste, noise, and other environmental factors on the development of chronic diseases. Its goal is to generate robust knowledge, share methodologies, and develop scientific recommendations to support environmental and health policies across Europe.
NOVA NSPH’s participation, which began in 2025, is realised through the EXPOSIM project, which investigates the role of environmental stressors in immune-mediated diseases. As a partner, the School contributes epidemiological and toxicological research, biomarker analysis, and integrated assessment of environmental exposure throughout the life course. The work also includes knowledge transfer to policymakers and the promotion of environmental health literacy within communities, reinforcing NOVA NSPH’s commitment to translating science into action.
Participation in ExpoHealthNet places NOVA NSPH at the forefront of European research in environmental health. This is a decisive step in transforming science into action and supporting the development of public policies that protect population health, emphasises Susana Viegas, Coordinator of the Department of Occupational and Environmental Health at NOVA NSPH.
Through this collaboration, NOVA NSPH reaffirms its commitment to producing excellent scientific knowledge, engaging in international research networks, and training professionals prepared to face global environmental health challenges.
