The Board of the National School of Public Health of NOVA University Lisbon (NOVA NSPH) expresses its deep sorrow at the passing of Professor Carlos Costa, who was part of the School from 1987 to 2023. He also served as Deputy Dean of NOVA NSPH, Director of the Department of Health System Policy and Management, and member of the Scientific Council.
Throughout his academic career, Professor Carlos Costa distinguished himself through his dedication to teaching and training several generations of hospital administrators, having also served as Director of the Specialisation Course in Hospital Administration.
Professor Carlos Costa left a mark on all who worked with him or learned from him, fostering independent thinking, critical analysis, autonomy, and intellectual rigor.
He was widely recognised in the health sector for his contribution to the evaluation of the performance of Portuguese public hospitals, through the publication of the ranking “Evaluation of the Performance of Public Hospitals (Inpatient Care) in Mainland Portugal”, a pioneering work reflecting his commitment to transparency, continuous improvement, and the efficiency of the health system.
Professor Carlos Costa leaves a significant legacy in hospital administration and health policy, reminding us of the importance of combining knowledge, critical thinking, and public service.
NOVA NSPH extends its condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.
