    About the Project:

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is the most common type, accounting for 90% of diabetes cases worldwide. The cornerstone of T2DM management involves self-care, counseling, and the promotion of health literacy. The quality of the relationship established between healthcare professionals and individuals with chronic illness, particularly regarding communication and satisfaction with care, plays a crucial role.

Thus, the CONCORDIA DM2 project aims to investigate differences in perception regarding the main concerns in disease management, the most valued factors, and the impact of the disease on the daily lives of individuals with chronic illness, with a particular focus on Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

    Under review:

The main objective of CONCORDIA DM2 is to expand the evidence base regarding the importance of assessing the key concerns of individuals with T2DM, the most valued factors in healthcare, and the identification of the primary impacts of the disease on people’s daily lives. By incorporating the perspectives of both individuals with T2DM and healthcare professionals, the project enables a comparison and assessment of asymmetries. Its design, using a mixed methods approach, ensures full adaptation of the instruments to the Portuguese context, as well as identifying and evaluating the feasibility of initiatives aimed at reducing these perspective asymmetries that hinder the delivery of healthcare.

    Implications for public health:

With an innovative character and great relevance for clinical practice, the project has allowed for an understanding of the reality, the identification of problems, and the proposal of initiatives to address them. In this way, healthcare structures, healthcare professionals, and individuals with T2DM are given the opportunity to act differently, improve procedures, and make communication more efficient and aligned with real needs, thereby enhancing clinical practice, improving communication, the quality of care, and health outcomes.
