SAFEST

SAFEST – Improving quality and patient SAFEty in surgical care through STandardisation and harmonisation of perioperative care in Europe

The SAFEST project aims to improve perioperative patient safety in the EU, addressing the 8% to 12% of hospitalized patients who experience adverse events, which cost around EUR 21 billion. Focusing on the entire perioperative pathway, the project emphasizes continuity of care and includes patients as co-equal partners in developing standardized practices.

These practices will be implemented in 10 hospitals across five EU countries through a Perioperative Quality Improvement Learning Collaborative (PQILC). The project’s evaluation will assess the impact on clinical outcomes and identify barriers and facilitators at different levels.

Additionally, 100 hospitals will be invited to participate in self-evaluation and international benchmarking. SAFEST plans to create an open-access benchmarking platform and an international network for perioperative patient care to ensure lasting impact beyond its duration.
