The SINDIA project seeks to understand how socio-spatial inequalities affect people with dementia (PwD) and their informal caregivers (IC) throughout the progression of the disease. In Portugal, approximately 200,000 people live with dementia, one of the highest prevalences globally. Factors such as lack of physical exercise and inadequate nutrition are risk factors, and social inequalities (income, gender, minorities) also influence diagnosis, treatment, and quality of life, negatively impacting caregivers.

The project integrates geography, gerontology, and health sciences to investigate how these inequalities affect health and well-being. Using mixed methods, including GIS, surveys, and participatory interviews, the SINDIA project examines the incidence of dementia across the country and the support needs.
